The Safety Engineering Activity (SEA) provides a full spectrum of services that support DOHS in safety engineering, owner advocacy and management support services. SEA is responsible for providing services critical to the mission of DOHS including:
- Mechanical/Industrial/Safety Engineering plan reviews
- Mechanical/Industrial/Safety Engineering site assessments and audits
- Validation of engineering systems in newly constructed or renovated biomedical research facilities
- Owner’s advocate services
- Maximum and high containment laboratory certification support
- Commissioning process support for all newly constructed high and maximum containment facilities to ensure the systems function per the design and performance requirements
- Consultation on highly complex biosafety related issues to ensure compliance with all guidelines, standards and requirements
- General and local exhaust ventilation studies
- Testing of facility containment and decontamination systems to validate efficacy
- Risk communication consultation and training
- Program and management support services including conception, collaboration, development and delivery of reports, guidelines, publications, web content, posters and training products
