Welcome to the Mechanical Instrument Design and Fabrication Section (MIDFS).

MIDFS provides custom design and fabrication services to the intramural research community at NIH. We have many years of specialized experience designing, modifying, fabricating and installing instruments for laboratory and clinical research. Our staff has special capabilities for design and fabrication of micro- and miniature devices used in many areas of research, such as: NMR; Surgery; Cellular Biology; Genetics; Neurobiology and Biophysics.

Our staff members hold many patents and are highly skilled and knowledgeable in computer-aided design and specialized fabrication techniques. We can work from formal drawings, scientific publications, sketches, examples, or verbal information to create instruments using glass, plastics or metals.
