Convent Drive Converts to Southbound Traffic Only for Construction of New Patient Parking Garage

Beginning Saturday, January 23, construction will begin on a new patient parking garage and adjoining utility vault along the west side of Convent Drive, where the old valet parking lot was located. Construction is anticipated to last 14 months.

As part of this construction and to create a safe buffer zone, it will be necessary to close one lane of traffic along Convent Drive between Center Drive and South Drive. This closure will result in a single lane of one-way traffic, in the southbound direction only. There will be no northbound traffic allowed during this period of construction. The nearby shuttle bus stop along Convent Drive has been temporarily moved across the street.

To help alleviate possible congestion issues, the NIH has restored campus access at South Drive/Old Georgetown Road to its pre-pandemic hours of operation.

South Drive/Old Georgetown Road:

Monday - Friday.

6am -10am – Inbound and Outbound traffic.

3pm – 7pm – Outbound traffic only.

Construction of this new parking garage, likely to be named MLP-15, and the associated utility vault, will support essential hospital operations and allow NIH to relocate almost 800 spaces from the parking garage below the Building 10 Ambulatory Care Research Facility (ACRF). The new utility vault will improve electrical capacity, host emergency and data center generators, and other critical functions. The Office of Research Facilities appreciates your patience and understanding as they complete this important upgrade to NIH facilities and utilities.
