Have you ever had to miss work because your regular child or adult dependent caregiver is sick or on vacation? Have you had to take off because your child is mildly ill? Do you need care for your school-aged children during spring break or other school closure days? Do you have a local or out-of-state aging parent who needs temporary assistance?

The NIH Back-Up Care program is here to help!

The NIH Back-Up Care program assists NIH Federal employees when they must be at work and their regular child or adult/elder care is unavailable. The NIH has a contract to provide access to the following short-term back-up care programs:

  •  Center-based child care
  • In-home child care
  • In-home adult/elder care
  • Self-care anywhere in the United States.

NIH Federal employees pay an hourly rate based on the type and amount of care used, and are eligible to use up to 10 days of back-up care per calendar year. You can also use the program when on official NIH travel, as well as for self-care if YOU need care due to an illness, treatment, or recovering from a surgery.

NIH Federal employees must register before using the program, and it is FREE to register. Reservations for care can be placed 30 days in advance and up to the actual day care is needed. Register today to ensure peace of mind tomorrow.
