The NIH wants you to be prepared for important changes
that are coming in April, 2014 to all NIH perimeter entrances.
The transition to a new, more secure type of PIV Card
reader will change how you use your PIV Card (HHS ID Badge) to enter the NIH
Bethesda campus.
To help you prepare for this transition, the Office of
Research Services (ORS) will soon be installing test sites around the NIH
campus and several off-campus locations where drivers and pedestrians can try
out their PIV cards with the new PIV Card readers.
Starting on March 20, 2014, those arriving by car will be
able to test their PIV Card with the new reader at the:
- South Drive (Metro) vehicle entrance right lane (from
6:00 a.m. to 10 a.m. weekdays).
Also starting on March 20, individuals will be able to
test their PIV Card with the new reader at special kiosks installed in the
lobbies of the following buildings:
- Building 31A (active as of Wednesday, March 19).
- Building 45 (active as of Wednesday, March 19).
- Building 10 (Clinical Center) North (active as of
Friday, March 21).
- Building 10 (Clinical Center) South (active as of
Friday, March 21).
- Bayview Research Center (BRC) in Baltimore, MD (active
as of Friday, March 21).
ORS is also setting up test stations at several
off-campus locations where trained staff can help you test your PIV Card to
make sure it will work with the new PIV Card Readers. Test stations will be
located at:
10401 Fernwood Road (3rd level common area).
Dates: Friday, March 14 through Friday, March 28.
Hours of operation: 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.
6001 Executive Blvd (in the cafeteria on the main level).
Dates: Monday, March 31 through Friday, April 11.
Hours of operation: 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.
The ORS invites you to click on the link, http://youtu.be/bL4rasW7jY4, to view a
brief video produced by the Division of Personnel Security and Access Control
and the NIH Police demonstrating the three steps you’ll need to follow so that
your PIV Card will work with the new readers:
1. REMOVE your PIV Card from its holder.
2. PLACE and HOLD your PIV Card flat against the reader.
3. Keeping the card pressed firmly against the reader, WAIT
for the green light and a beep for access.
If you discover that your PIV card is not working with
the new reader, you will be able to visit an ID Badge Issuance Station for a
replacement badge. Instructions for obtaining help will be provided on the
kiosk and at off-campus locations.
