This September: A Time to Remember. A Time to Prepare.
September is National Preparedness Month – an annual campaign encouraging Americans to take simple steps to prepare for emergencies in their homes, schools, organizations, businesses and communities. This September marks the 10-year anniversary of 9/11. We remember those lost, honor our first responders, and renew our commitment to prepare and plan for emergencies.
The Office of Research Services, Division of Emergency Preparedness and Coordination (DEPC), is the principle emergency planning resource for the NIH. DEPC is responsible for coordinating all NIH resources essential to emergency planning and preparedness functions to include:
- Developing and issuing emergency plans for all NIH facilities located both on and off campus
- Developing response plans and training NIH personnel in how to deal with emergencies
- Coordinating recovery efforts following an incident requiring multiple NIH organizations
- Providing emergency communication services through a system called AlertNIH
AlertNIH is a mass communication system capable of sending voice, text and soon desktop emergency notifications to employees. The system relies on information you input into the NIH Enterprise Directory (NED). NED will automatically register your NIH devices. I encourage you to allow transmission of emergency communication to your personal communication devices, such as your cell phone or personal e-mail account. Instructions on registering these devices can be found at:
Throughout September, DEPC staff will visit various buildings showcasing emergency supply kits, family emergency planning, AlertNIH, and other important information. Please stop by to learn more about emergency preparedness and the services DEPC offers. The dates, times and locations of the displays are:
