Beginning December 9, the NIH Commuting and Parking Services (CAPS) System will require 2-factor authentication (2FA) for access: CAPS is used to receive or make changes to your parking and commuter benefits at the NIH. CAPS will use the same NIH Advanced Login, or 2-factor authentication (2FA), used to access your NIH Web E-mail. Currently, CAPS requires only your NIH username and password to log in.
2-factor authentication will require something you have (e.g., a registered device or PIV card) and something you know (e.g., a PIN) to access CAPS. This new login requirement will better secure your account and data and allow you to access CAPS from a variety of devices and locations (including your home).
If you already have access to NIH Web E-mail, no further action is necessary. Your current 2FA will carry over to CAPS. If you have not enrolled in 2FA, then taking the following steps will save time later. The next time you're connected to the NIH network, take a few minutes to ensure you're ready for this change to the CAPS system:
1. Visit (before December 8) or (on December 9 or later).
2. Insert your PIV card into your card reader to access your account.
3. Provide a mobile phone number to receive a text and/or an external e-mail address to receive an e-mail.
4. Create a six to 10 digit PIN.
5. Register your device the next time you log into Web E-mail Access or CAPS.
6. Now you are ready to access CAPS or Web E-mail Access from your registered personal device using your NIH User ID and PIN.
7. If you run into any issues, please start here for helpful guides and information:
