Change to Biological Material Import Process

As of September 17, 2018, the Division of Occupational Health and Safety's Quarantine Permit Service Office (QPSO) no longer submits import permit applications on behalf of NIH personnel to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Import Permit Program (

QPSO will maintain its current role in making determinations for import permit and issuance of letters for material exempted from Public Health Service import permits. If an import permit is required, QPSO will direct NIH personnel to the appropriate permit application process.

NIH personnel who wish to receive biological material from outside the United States must submit import request(s) through QPSO:

Revisions to NIH policy as well as online, promotional, and training materials will be made to reflect this procedural change.
