The Division of International Services (DIS) is responsible for verifying that all foreign nationals (individuals who are not U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents) placed at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have been lawfully admitted to the United States and are undertaking activities at NIH that are appropriate for their immigration status. Such individuals must be cleared by DIS before they are eligible for an NIH Identification Badge.
Most badge clearances for NIH Visiting Program (VP) participants (those in an NIH designation requiring DIS
case processing) are completed as a part of DIS case processing. In the event that a VP participant requires a badge clearance outside of normal case processing, administrators should refer to the
Badge Sponsorship (NIH Sponsored Foreign Nationals) page.
For all other foreign nationals present at NIH (Contractors, Tenants, and Volunteers (NOT Special Volunteers)), once the administrator has sponsored the badge, the individual may bring the
required documents to DIS Monday-Friday, 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. For individuals who require an NIH ID badge but do not work at the main campus in Bethesda, documents may be
submitted remotely via a secure method.
