The NIH Interpreting Services program provides sign language interpreting services to facilitate communication and enable members of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing (D/HH) community to enjoy equal access to all the benefits and privileges offered at NIH; available to the NIH workforece, patients/families, and visitors. Services delivered under this contract are centrally funded and include basic/scientific American Sign Language (ASL), Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART), and Video Remote Interpreting (VRI). All requests are entered into a secure online portal on the NIH network.

Enter your request in now! Requests entered less than 5 days before the event may not be filled. 

Planning a general audience event?

Confirm attendees requiring interpreting services BEFORE scheduling and remember to cancel requests within 48 hours (2 business days) to avoid billable charges to NIH.

Include the following language in event announcements:

Sign language interpreting services are available upon request.  Individuals who need interpreting services and/or other reasonable accommodations to participate in this event, should contact NAMEXXX, PHONEXXXX or the Federal Relay Service @ 800-877-8339. Requests should be made five days in advance of the event. 

Clinical Center staff may enter requests for deaf or hard of hearing patients or their families using the Access Portal. Services are available 24/7 and patients receive priorty scheduling. For urgent requests outside of normal business hours, email or call 571-730-4330

Need a spoken language interpreter?

Contact the Clinical Center Social Work Department at 301-496-2792. Spoken language interpretation is available to patients with limited English proficiency.
