Temporary Overnight Permit Request

Temporary Permits

The NIH Parking Office issues temporary permits for short time periods when necessary. Issuance of temporary permits is limited by regulation. These permits are typically authorized in General parking areas. If a individual is eligible for preferred (Red) parking, the permit will be issued, valid in these areas.

NIH Transhare, Vanpool and Bicycle Subsidy members who work on the NIH Campus can print their temporary permits at any computer by accessing the Commuting and Parking System (CAPS).  Please be sure that the computer is connected or has access to a printer. NIH Transhare and Vanpool members are permitted to receive up to 6 permits per calendar quarter. NIH Bicycle Subsidy Members are permitted to receive up to 12 permits per calendar quarter. After logging into the system, please click the button "Print Temporary Permit," and follow the on-screen instructions. NIH Transhare, Bicycle and Vanpool members who need a temporary parking permit, can request one to be issued by sending an email to the NIH Parking Office, with the below information. Please submit this request at least two business days in advance.

Temporary Overnight Permit Request

In accordance with NIH Manual Chapter 1410, no parking on the campus for more than 24 hours is permitted, unless while on official government travel. Temporary Overnight Permits can only be requested and issued no more than two weeks in advance of the requested start date. Currently only customers assigned to the NIH Bethesda main campus can request and be issued Temporary Overnight Parking, and must be on official travel.

The NIH Parking Office prefers Temporary Permits to be requested online through our CAPS system. This allows the requester to receive email notifications when your request is submitted and approved. Additionally, once their overnight parking requests are approved, customers will be able to print the permit through the CAPS system.
After logging into the CAPS system with your NIH username and password, please choose the button "Request Temporary Overnight Parking Permit." Follow the online prompts to submit your request.
If your request was submitted successfully, you will receive an email confirmation. Once the NIH Parking Office approves your request, you will receive a second email with your approval details and instructions on printing your permit at your workstation.

Alternatively, support staff can request temporary parking permits for their travelers and supervisors by emailing the NIH Parking Office with the following information below, please copy and paste into the body of the email. Also, be advised, these requests will take longer to process and may require the permit to be picked up in person at the NIH Parking Office during normal business hours, Monday through Friday 8:00AM to 4:00PM. We are located in Building 31, Room 1A11.
